What is an EPF Calculator?
An EPF Calculator is a free online tool that helps salaried employees project how large their Employees' Provident Fund (EPF) balance could grow by the time they retire. EPF is a government-backed retirement savings scheme managed by the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO), in which both you and your employer contribute a fixed share of your basic salary plus Dearness Allowance (DA) every month.
Instead of manually working through years of monthly contributions, annual interest declarations and salary increases, the Chola Securities EPF Calculator does the maths instantly. Enter a few details about your current salary and age, and the tool projects your accumulated retirement corpus so you can plan your financial future with clarity.
How EPF contributions work
EPF contributions are based on your Basic salary plus Dearness Allowance (DA). Each month, a portion flows into your provident fund account from both sides:
- Employee contribution: 12% of Basic + DA is deducted from your salary and credited to your EPF account.
- Employer contribution: The employer also contributes 12% of Basic + DA. In practice, the employer's 12% is split — 8.33% goes to the Employees' Pension Scheme (EPS) and only 3.67% goes to EPF, subject to wage ceiling limits. This calculator assumes the full employer share goes into EPF for simplicity, giving an upper-end estimate.
- Interest: The accumulated balance earns interest at the rate declared annually by EPFO, currently 8.25% per annum, compounded monthly.
How does the EPF Calculator work?
The calculator starts from your current monthly Basic + DA. Each month it adds your contribution plus a matching employer contribution to the running balance, which then earns interest at the EPF rate compounded monthly. Your salary grows by the annual increase percentage you enter, raising future contributions year by year. The corpus builds from your current age until retirement at 58.
Monthly contribution = (Basic + DA) × (Your % + Employer %) = (Basic + DA) × 2 × Your %
Closing balance (month) = (Opening balance + Monthly contribution) × (1 + r/12)
where r = 8.25% annual EPF rate and Basic + DA grows each year by your annual salary increase rate.
Worked example: Suppose you are 30 years old with a monthly Basic + DA of ₹50,000. You contribute 12% and the employer adds another 12%, so 24% goes into EPF each month. With a salary growth of 5% per year and an EPF rate of 8.25% per annum, your monthly contributions compound over 28 years until retirement at 58. The result: total contributions of approximately ₹84,09,972, total interest earned of approximately ₹1,72,22,893, and a retirement corpus of approximately ₹2,56,32,865.
Note: this is an upper-end estimate. In practice the employer's 12% is split between EPS (8.33%) and EPF (3.67%), and EPFO may revise the interest rate each year. Treat the output as an indicative projection rather than a guaranteed figure.
How do I use Chola Securities' EPF Calculator?
Using the calculator takes four steps.
- Step 1 — Enter your monthly salary (Basic + DA). This is the base on which your EPF contributions are calculated.
- Step 2 — Enter your current age. The calculator builds your corpus from your current age to retirement at 58.
- Step 3 — Set your contribution to EPF (%). The standard employee contribution is 12%. The calculator adds a matching employer contribution automatically.
- Step 4 — Enter your expected annual salary increase (%). This raises your contribution base each year, reflecting typical salary growth over your career.
The EPF interest rate is fixed at 8.25% per annum and retirement is taken as age 58 — neither needs to be entered. The calculator instantly shows your projected total contributions, total interest earned, and retirement corpus.
Why EPF matters for retirement planning
- Disciplined retirement saving — contributions are deducted automatically every month, building a corpus without any additional effort.
- Government-backed returns — EPF offers a competitive interest rate (currently 8.25% p.a.) backed by EPFO, with no market risk.
- Employer contribution boosts your savings — your employer's matching contribution effectively adds to your retirement fund every month at no extra cost to you.
- Tax-efficient (EEE) — contributions, interest and withdrawals are broadly tax-free when the account is held for 5 or more years, subject to prevailing rules.
- Power of compounding — monthly compounding over a long career can turn relatively modest monthly contributions into a substantial retirement corpus, as the worked example above shows.
- Liquidity when needed — EPFO permits partial withdrawals for specific purposes such as buying a home, medical treatment, marriage or education, subject to eligibility conditions.
