The coupon rate is the annual interest rate paid by the bond issuer to the bondholder, expressed as a percentage of the bond's face value. For example, a bond with an 8.75% coupon pays ₹8.75 per year for every ₹100 of face value. The coupon rate is fixed at the time the bond is issued and does not change over its life.
The coupon rate is the fixed annual interest paid by the issuer. The yield reflects the actual return you earn if you buy the bond at its current market price rather than at face value. If the bond is trading above face value, the yield will be lower than the coupon rate. If it is trading below face value, the yield will be higher. The yield on the Chola Securities bond listing shows your effective return at the current price.
A bond's credit rating is an assessment of the issuer's ability to repay interest and principal on time, assigned by SEBI-registered credit rating agencies such as CRISIL, ICRA, CARE, Brickworks, FITCH, and IRRPL. A rating of AAA indicates the highest credit quality. Higher-rated bonds carry lower default risk but typically offer lower yields. Lower-rated bonds offer higher yields to compensate for greater risk.
Tax free bonds are bonds where the interest income earned by the investor is exempt from income tax under the Income Tax Act, 1961. They are typically issued by government-backed entities such as NHAI, IRFC, REC, PFC, and HUDCO. The interest is paid at a fixed coupon rate. Note that TDS at 10% is deducted on interest payable on listed securities held in dematerialised form, as per the provisions of Section 193 of the Income Tax Act, 1961, effective from 1st April 2023.
